When car2go approached me about reviewing their new 4 door, 5 person Mercedes for Vancouver, it took me about 1 second to say yes. I have been a big fan of their car sharing service for a number of years, using their 2 person Smart cars for date night, girls’ night out (when we might have a little wine and want to cab it home), and for the occasional trip to the airport when I am flying solo. With the family, however, we have often relied on taxis that are in notoriously short supply in Vancouver (the city also does not have Uber as of yet). I was delighted to know that families now had another option to get around the city.

Hot deal: Register with car2go before Dec. 6th, 2015 to take advantage of their $5 membership special with 60 minutes free driving time (saves you about $50).

The Experience

I’ll admit to not knowing a lot about cars. My expectation for the 4 door Mercedes B Class was that it would drive like a car2go Smart car (while fun, I always feel like I am driving a toy car). I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that this car handles exceptionally well ( better than our SUV) and was really enjoyable to drive. Being that the vehicles are new to Vancouver, I felt a bit like I was enjoying my 15 minutes of fame, as many people did a double-take when they spotted the car.

The Features

This car has lots of bells and whistles such as navigation, Bluetooth connectivity for your phone and music, voice control, 3 driving modes (sport, economy and manual), charging cords, a backup camera, tons of space in the hatchback and more. Most importantly for families, it has all the necessary room and safety features for kids (with attachment points for car seats and booster seats). The Cost

The 4 door car2go costs the same as a regular car2go ($.41/minute). To use their service you first need to have a car2go membership.  If you do not have one already, they are offering a great deal for B.C. residents with a reduced $5 membership fee and 60 minutes free driving time (saves you about $50). Register here before Dec. 6th, 2015.

How to Find One

The 5 person car2go vehicles are currently available in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. Using the car2go smartphone app, click on the settings tab to enable 4 door cars. As shown in the image below, only the 4 door cars will be highlighted on the city map.

While trying out the new 4 door car2go, I used it for a girls’ night out, running errands (a pumpkin patch outside of town) and took it to a Whitecaps game. Since car2go now has parking at YVR, I would love to use it for getting to the airport with the family. Want to see more?  Here is a little youtube video from our weekend adventure.
