Family Suite Hotels in New York City Guide

Are you looking for New York City hotel suites for families? You’ve come to the right place. Over many trips to NYC with kids, and some near obsessive research, I have compiled a list of my favorites hotels in NYC for families that offer the luxury and comfort of more space.

It can be tricky, for example, to find roomy one and two bedroom suite hotels in New York City – but they do exist. You just have to know where to look. The same goes for kitchenettes, but every family suite hotel listed here offers cooking facilities, allowing guests to save money by self-catering

Please start with the following tips for finding the best New York hotels with suites for families. Alternatively, go straight to the top 12 family suites New York City list.

Just want the best-of-the-best? Here are my 5 top booking family suite hotels in NYC for 5 years running!

  1. The San Carlos Hotel (Midtown East – 4)
  2. Best Western Plus Hospitality House (Midtown East – 3)
  3. The Hotel Beacon (Upper West Side – 4)

Tips – Finding Family Suite Hotels NYC

Location

Visiting NYC with kids can be quite exhausting. It helps if you can find a hotel that is close to where you will be spending most of your time. This will allow you to save both time and money that would otherwise be spent getting around.

When our kids were small, we spent the majority of our time around Central Park (playgrounds, the carousel, the zoo, the Children’s Museum, the Museum of Natural History etc.) so we would base ourselves on the Upper East Side or Upper West Side.

Once they were a little older, we preferred Midtown, which is closer to Times Square, the Broadway Theater District, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, Madison Square Gardens and more. There are several good hotels in New York with suites for families near Times Square in Midtown, but most are just a short walk away in the quieter Midtown East area.

If you have a teen who is interested in doing a bunch of shopping, you may prefer to be in Lower Manhattan, close to Soho, where they will find many of their favorite shops. Lower Manhattan also gives you very easy access to Brooklyn, the Staten Island ferry and the Statue of Liberty cruise tours.

Finding Value

It helps if you can get your head around the fact that New York City hotels with family suites are very pricey in comparison to those in most other major cities. To be 100% honest, no matter how much research I do, I am often ever so slightly disappointed with my family suites NYC options.

This is largely due to the fact that NYC hotels are so darn expensive that it’s hard to feel like you are getting good value. Basically, I am suggesting that you should try to get your expectations in check. You are paying for real estate in one of the most expensive cities on the planet!

Furthermore, before you decide to spend a ton of money on one of the fancier family suites in Manhattan, consider how much time you will actually spend in your hotel room. In all likelihood, you will be out exploring all day, every day, and coming back only to recharge.

Suite Size

Manhattan family suites are quite small in comparison to many other North American cities. I have found this to be especially true of some of the newer hotel properties in the city. If new and modern is not a priority for you, you can sometimes get more space for your dollar at an older, more traditionally-styled hotel.

Since most New York family hotels list the size of the room, I always take this into consideration. For a suite, I like something that is at minimum 40 sq. meters (430 sq. feet) – and ideally much larger.

Tip: The traditional (and very highly rated) San Carlos Hotel has one bedroom family suites that are 56m2 (over 600 square feet). The Best Western Hospitality Suites has comfortable suites that run as large as 102m2 (almost 1100 square feet). This is absolutely huge by NYC standards!

Read Reviews

Please take the time to thoroughly read reviews from families before booking your accommodations. On Tripadvisor you can filter for reviews by families and then type kids into the search bar to narrow those reviews down even further.

Bed Size

If you are looking at Manhattan hotels with family suites that have a 2 bed configuration, try to make sure that the suite offers 2 queen beds not 2 double or full beds. (It is very rare to find a NYC family hotel room with 2 king beds.)

The difference in the dimensions can make all the difference between a great night’s sleep and a sleepless night.

  • Queen Bed or Large Double Dimensions = 60″x80″ (152cm x 203cm)
  • Double Bed or Full Bed Dimensions = 54″ x 75″ (134cm x 90cm)

Note: Having recently shared a double bed with my husband in Mexico (after a room mix up), I can tell you that his heels were comically hanging off the end of the bed.

Provision Up

It is becoming more common for family suite hotels in NYC to offer a grocery stocking service. While there may be a surcharge for this service, if you are arriving at a hotel late in the evening, this may well be worth the splurge.

Another option is to use a grocery delivery service such as AmazonFresh or Instacart. If it is your first time using one of these services, you can usually find a free trial or free first time delivery.

Furthermore, I have sometimes found that I can glean some very helpful information from reviews left by family travelers on Google or Tripadvisor. Many people love to offer full trip reports sharing their favorite grocery stores and restaurants near their chosen hotel property.

Book Early

Book early to secure the best rate on family suites in NYC. Sites such as Booking.com and Expedia usually offer a no deposit / flexible cancellation policy. I tend to reserve my chosen New York family hotel as soon as my flights are booked and then check back periodically to see if I can find a better deal (canceling the original reservation and rebooking at the better rate).

Housekeeping Services

Unfortunately, this is a new section I’ve had to add to this family suite New York City post since the pandemic. During Covid, daily housekeeping services at many hotels were either limited or entirely suspended.

For cost-saving reasons, many properties have been reluctant to bring them back in full. I would say this scenario is even more common in hotels with family suites in New York, as they sort of fall under the self catering category.

If daily housekeeping is important to you (as it is to me when I am on vacation), I strongly suggest that you confirm it is available before you book. I’ve noticed a trend at some hotels whereby you need to opt-in when you check in, or need to put a tag on the outside of your room door each day to ensure cleaning. Some hotels, I have also noted, are choosing to offer housekeeping every second day, or every few days, rather than daily.

Note: You can normally find housekeeping information in the room description. On sites such as Booking.com, it is typically listed under the heading Facilities/Cleaning.

Connecting Hotel Rooms New York

If you are looking for hotels in New York with connecting rooms, pay careful attention. Look for language like internally connecting, inter-connecting or adjoining instead of adjacent, where the rooms are unlikely to have an internally connected door.

The truth is, it can be very tricky to successfully book New York hotels with adjoining rooms. The reason for this is that while many hotels will let your request them, very few will actually guarantee them.

Obviously, this is a huge problem for families looking for hotels in New York with connecting rooms. Arriving at a hotel to discover that your supposedly connecting rooms are actually on two different floors is definitely not ideal (and something that has happened to our family on numerous occasions over the years).

Expedia offers a feature allowing you to book connecting rooms. After you book the rooms, Expedia reaches out to the hotel to confirm that connecting rooms are available and then confirms with you via email. Personally, I still think there is a small risk here that you could arrive at your chosen property and not have connecting rooms.

Much better is Hilton’s connecting hotel room finder. Hilton goes so far as to actually guarantee that you will have connecting rooms in NYC.

Tip: For the best rates (up to 17% off), I highly recommend you become a Hilton Honors member (free) before making a booking.

Note: I stayed at this hotel when my children were 1 and 4 years respectively. I liked the fact that it was in such a quiet area but still within an easy stroller roll of Central Park. Our one bedroom suite was spacious enough to have some friends over for a glass of wine in the living room while our kids went to sleep in the bedroom.

Family Accommodations NYC – Other Options

Family Vacation Rentals NYC

You also may wish to consider vacation rental sites such as VRBO and Plum Guide. I will caution, however, that finding a good, well-priced family vacation rental in NYC can be a little more challenging than in some other major cities. Part of the reason for this is that many buildings in Manhattan are restricted from doing short-term rentals of less that 30 days.

That said, there are companies like Sonder.com that buy up whole buildings and convert them to short-term rentals. They offer some great family suite options in NYC if you don’t need all the extra services of a hotel.

Note: Personally, I find that vacation rentals make the most sense for our family when we are staying at least 5 nights. Otherwise, the added service fees and cleaning fees often make the stay cost as much, and sometimes more than what a hotel would be.
